Higher
Through Them.

Dogs change us.

The Handler Project is about becoming better at both ends of the leash: a capable dog, and a handler who knows how to bring that out.

People. Dogs. Purpose. Change.

The Idea

The dog is only half the project.

Training changes the dog.
Doing it well changes the handler.

The Handler Project follows both sides of that process: the mechanics of training, the development of the handler, and the relationship that grows between them.

What We Do

Learn

Understand why training works.

Learning theory, timing, reinforcement, motivation, and pressure. Why a session works, and why it sometimes doesn’t.

Apply

Turn knowledge into skill.

Training sessions, exercises, observations, mistakes, progression, and what actually happens when theory meets a real dog.

Become

Develop the other end of the leash.

The patience, timing, and self-awareness it takes to be a handler worth following.

Progress is the project.

Fixe! Held Next to a Game of Fetch

Focus can still break around other dogs, but Fixe! brings it back. Squirrels are the next level.

Training Philosophy

Built around the relationship.

Clarity before complexity.

Build understanding before expectations.

Engagement before obedience.

Give the dog a reason to work with you.

Progress before perfection.

Training is built through repetitions, not breakthroughs.

The handler keeps learning.

Your dog is not the only student.

Carry forward.

What they teach us becomes part of what comes next.

The Origin

I didn’t expect grief to lead me here.

Losing Charlie changed the way I looked at dogs, training, and the time we get with them.

I had always been interested in training, but after he was gone, that interest became something deeper. I started studying, asking better questions, and trying to understand the craft instead of just going through the motions.

Then Gunner came into my life.

Training him gave me somewhere to put that energy. Somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn’t only fascinated by what a dog could become. I was becoming passionate about the responsibility and craft of being a better handler.

The Handler Project grew out of that.

Dogs give us more than we realize while they’re here.

They teach patience. Responsibility. Presence. Discipline. Forgiveness. And sometimes they get us through years we couldn’t have gotten through the same way on our own.

This project exists to take those lessons seriously, and to become better because of them.

Do right by the dogs in front of you. Carry forward what the ones before them taught you.

Follow along

The project is never finished.

Whether you’re raising your first dog, developing a working dog, learning the craft of training, or simply trying to become better for the dog beside you,

keep becoming.

Higher Through Them.

Same heart. A brighter tomorrow.
